We warmly invite you to the opening of the exhibition "Monsters and Mutants" by the New York-based architecture firm Archi-Tectonics on Tuesday, May 27 at 7 pm at the Architekturgalerie München.
Speakers:
Winka Dubbeldam, founding partner, Archi-Tectonics
Justin Korhammer, partner, Archi-Tectonics
Nicola Borgmann, Architekturgalerie München
Archi-Tectonics, the New York City-based design firm led by Winka Dubbeldam and Justin Korhammer, will present its work in a solo exhibition at the Architekturgalerie München, coinciding with the debut its fifth monograph Monsters and Mutants, Park Books 2025. With an extensive portfolio of buildings and masterplans across four continents over the last 25 years, the firm is widely recognized for its innovative architectural strategies and hybrid designs.
Opening on May 27th at 18:00h, the Monsters and Mutants exhibition explores the fusion of architecture and nature, illustrating how plant intelligence can inform design strategies in the face of climate change and environmental extremes. This exhibition delves into the concept of “hopeful monsters”, or mutant architectural forms that blend synthetic and natural systems, reimagining the built environment as a dynamic ecosystem, as exemplified by Archi-Tectonics’ 47-hectare masterplan with seven buildings in Hangzhou, China as well as their ongoing mixed-use development projects in Albania.
Building on Archi-Tectonics’ commitment to rigorous research and generative design, Monsters and Mutants highlights the studio’s performance-based approach to architecture and urbanism. The exhibition features architectural models and panels that showcase the firm’s experimental methodologies, using the multifunctional landscapes of the Hangzhou masterplan, and the digital design and cutting-edge fabrication of its buildings as case studies. These themes are also embodied in the Monsters and Mutants book that presents a provocation for a new approach to reverse the consequences of the Anthropocene, by learning from plant intelligence.
About Archi-Tectonics
Founded in 1994 by Dutch architect Winka Dubbeldam, and now also led by German architect Justin Korhammer, Archi-Tectonics is a certified woman-owned studio with offices in New York City, Amsterdam, and Hangzhou.
Archi-Tectonics has completed an impressive portfolio of buildings globally over the last 25 years, focusing on rigorous research to address complex urban challenges and tackle climate change. The studio uses generative architectural strategies inspired by biological processes to design hybrid, resilient, and low-carbon-impact environments, such as the recent 116-acre Asian Games eco-masterplan with seven buildings in Hangzhou. Their work ranges in scale and type, from mixed-use urban masterplans like the 80-acre Healthy Living Village in Staten Island to advanced, climate-responsive structures that integrate innovative materials and cutting-edge fabrication techniques, including the recently completed London Solar House [2024], the 512GW building [2021] with Climate Skin, the V33 condominiums Tribeca, and the 497GW passive solar condominiums in New York City. Every intervention is a catalyst, transforming environmental, economic, and social spheres into vibrant live-work-play spaces.
The team of multidisciplinary architects, engineers, consultants and biologists have designed multi-building concepts on four continents. Currently, the studio is working on over 250,000 sqm of new developments in the USA and Europe, including two masterplans in Albania. Research and curatorial work reflect their commitment to bridging practice and theory, with an upcoming Park Books monograph, “Monsters & Mutants” (Summer 2025), and 2025 exhibitions in Venice Architecture Biennale, Spazio Milesi Milan, and Bogota Biennial Fall 2025. The studio’s previous publications include “Strange Objects, New Solids and Massive Things” (Actar 2022), “ARCHI-TECTONICS: Winka Dubbeldam” (DAAB 2011), and “AT-INdex: Winka Dubbeldam” (Princeton Architectural Press 2007)
