With the conclusion of the ideas competition, an important milestone for the development of Munich's northeast has been reached. The prizewinners' entries show visions for this new urban building block for the usage densities of 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 inhabitants. The urban expansion area of Munich's northeast is, along with Freiham, one of the most important strategic urban development projects in Munich. Depending on the density of usage, approximately 3,600 to 10,600 apartments can be built here to relieve the continuing high demand for residential space. However, at least half of the area should also be kept permanently free for existing uses such as agriculture and equestrian sports as well as for the preservation of valuable landscape elements.
The task was to create a convincing vision of a future-oriented development of Munich's special identities and qualities. Munich's northeast is to show how a future-oriented urban development can look like by forming new neighborhoods between existing housing estates, new urban building blocks and a networked system of green and open spaces. The aim was to find a meaningful sequence of individual development phases, taking into account that, in addition to the construction of new residential and work places, the necessary social, green and technical infrastructures can be provided in good time and successively.

On January 24, 2020, a jury of experts chaired by Prof. Markus Allmann awarded prizes to the best designs.
