In Europe, many thousands of wind turbine blades will be retired in the coming years. With their design, construction, and material properties, these rotor blades make excellent aesthetic, ergonomic, and iconic building elements for large-scale outdoor furniture that is as durable as it is vandal-proof. Wind rotor blades were first used for a playground in Rotterdam 15 years ago by Dutch architectural firm Superuse Studios. Now they are creating designs all over the world where rotor blade "trash" occurs, using them to create street furniture, bridges, noise barriers, playground equipment, bike racks and more. The BLADE MADE designs give places new social meaning and create a distinctive identity through a variety of design options, such as in combination with street art. The playgrounds encourage interaction and community building, promoting solidarity, inclusion and imagination. When installed as noise barriers, they combine functionality with aesthetic design and the promotion of biodiversity. Compared to standard solutions, BLADE MADE designs can achieve up to 90% CO2 reduction.
