"The urban space will only remain sustainable if the existing is cleverly transformed and the new thoughtfully integrated." The Basel-based architecture and general planning company Burckhardt+Partner follows this maxim in its projects all over the world.
Since three years the bunker at Viktualienmarkt has been transformed into a popular meeting place for open discourse on building culture through the events, installations and exhibitions of the Architekturgalerie München. For OPEN art 2019, the Swiss architectural office is now focusing for the first time on structural interventions in and around the bunker building. The exhibition, entitled TRANSFORMATIONS, converts the hermetic building with real and illusionist views, a bar, dark beds and art. The installation by the artist Christoph Brech on the façade with the letters U M W A N D E L N refers to the current transformation process inside the building. New entrances through the thick concrete walls and large-format illuminated images offer unexpected insights and views. A kaleidoscope covering the entire wall presents selected works from Burckhardt + Partner's nearly 70-year oeuvre. The silence of the bunker is acoustically broken by a sound installation by the composer Peter Ablinger. The percussionist Adam Weisman plays the composition Membrane, Regen, Weiss/Weisslich 31e with 8 glass tubes at the opening and at the OPEN Art weekend.
Mushrooms are cultivated on an urban farming area on the ground floor of the bunker, supported by the ArchitekturKulturstiftung Munich.
